Pet Ultrasonography in Wakeley

What Is an Ultrasound?

You're likely familiar with the role of ultrasounds in pregnancy, where these high-frequency sound waves are used to give parents and their medical specialists a better look at the developing baby inside its mother. However, ultrasounds can also be used for other medical purposes, including examination and diagnosis of the state of internal organs. This procedure works for animals just like it does for people.

Why a Pet Ultrasound?

Ultrasound allows for a much more thorough examination of soft tissues and internal organs than a physical examination on its own. If your veterinarian decides to recommend an ultrasound, it will likely be done to help confirm a difficult diagnosis or to examine hard-to-see areas in more detail. This gives medical professionals a better idea of what might be going on inside your pet and helps them decide how to treat it.

The Ultrasound Process

Because ultrasounds are painless, there is ordinarily no need for anesthesia. A sedative may be used to help some pets remain still in order for the scan to work properly. Your pet's stomach or other areas may be shaved in order for the ultrasound to get a clear reading, and the entire process will be non-invasive and non-surgical yet still allow for a much closer inspection of the internal organs.
